Slab building W/ slump mold
This slab project I think was one of the few assignments I struggled on because of trying to get the structure to stay still when you fold it to make a cup. I think once I made a base for the bottom and then added my rolled slab on top of it I was able to start blending in more of the clay to the bottom structure so it can have more of a balance when I'm trying to smooth it out.
I really enjoyed doing this project because it was easier to form a cup shape with a slab then when you start with a pinch pot, I think once I started to add the handle it got a little tricky because I didn't want to bend the inside in too much so it can still have its shape from the slab.
Sgraffito
Sgraffito was really hard to do because I had to paint then carve and I felt like when I carved it was just taking all my color away and it was a little tricky using underglaze because I don't use it often with my pieces so I think the reason for it cracking after it got fired was because I probably had it too dry for the type of temperature that it was put in but I really liked the designs I did on it I was a bit disappointed when I came to class and saw it like that but at least I learned that I need to always have it really moist when I'm doing underglaze because when its put in the fire it heats it up way faster that if I don't have enough moisture then it'll crack.
I think I'll try this piece again next semester so I can have a better understanding on the type of clay that's acceptable to be in the kiln.
Coil building
For this project it took a couple tries until I was confident with it and started to do more to the sides like adding different shapes, at first I felt like it was going to be super easy to add wavy lines but it was super hard to get the first one to stay still and act like a base for all the other ones but once I started to get an idea on what I want it to look like I started coming up with a way to make the design i want on first down on the table and I place my coil building on top so I can smooth the inside and have it looking exactly like it does in the picture.
As I started to do the top part it was really hard to twist around the clay so it can look like the way it does near the lower part so I kinda cut and smoothed the round parts so it can still have that texture that the twirl would've gave it. I also decided to start the bottom base off first with simple lines so it can balance evenly when its on a surface .
